Lake Tahoe is a large freshwater lake in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. It straddles the state line between California and Nevada. The drive is about 30-45 minutes from Reno. About Harrah's Lake Tahoe:
In 1958, William Harrah acquired an interest in the Sateline Country Club and Nevada Club in the Lake Tahoe area. He called it Harrah's Stateline Club. Making entertainment a priority, Harrah built a 750 seat showroom in 1959. The opening act was Red Skelton. Harrah's went public in 1971 and was able to build a hotel tower at the property - they earned the first five-star diamond rating in casino history. Harrah died in 1978 and the property was acquired by Holiday Inn in 1980. Over the years, the ownership has changed a few times. The property is now owned by Vici Properties and operated by Caesars Entertainment Corporation.
About William Harrah:
William F. Harrah (1911-1978) was a businessman and founder of Harrah's Hotel and Casinos. He worked at various family businesses in Southern California. One of the businesses included gambling called the Reno Game. In 1937, Harrah opened Harrah's Club Bingo in Reno, Nevada. It closed within a month. He later opened another business in the downtown area, with the help of some influential friends, which was more successful. In the 1950's, he expanded to the Lake Tahoe Area. In 1973, he purchased the Holiday Casino on the Las Vegas Strip. He died in 1978 at the Mayo Clinic Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota at the age of 66 during a cardiac surgery operation to repair an aortic aneurysm. He was known for his influence to create the Nevada Gaming Control Board along with the Gaming Commission. He was also praised for his positive relations with both his customers and employees.

The William F. Harrah College of Hospitality at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in hospitality management. The school was ranked number one in the world for hospitality in 2017 and 2018 by QS World University Rankings.
