What is a Silver Strike?
A Silver Strike is a Limited Edition Gaming Token which is won from a special slot machine and is in a protective plastic holder. People from all over the world collect, buy, sell and trade these unique gaming tokens. The first Silver Strikes were won from special slot machines in the Reno/Tahoe area of Nevada in 1992. The tokens have been issued with redeemable values of , , , , , , , 0 and 0. The most common denomination is .
Did you know that the older silver strikes have a higher silver content? When the price of silver went up, the silver content went down - it was impossible to make a silver strike for . Many silver strikes today are CLAD or heavy silver plated.
The New Frontier History:
Bought and sold - ownership changed several times over... mob ties...and union strikes are all part of the history of The New Frontier Hotel and Casino. The overall theme of the resort was western, as the name suggests. It was located across the street from Steve Wynn's Encore and just north of the Fashion Show Mall at 3120 South Las Vegas Boulevard. From 1930-1942, the property was a nightclub with names: Pair-O-Dice, The Ambassador Night Club and the 91 Club. In 1942, it was rebuilt and renamed Hotel Last Frontier and in 1955 renamed the New Frontier. By the late 1960's it was named The Frontier. In 1967, Howard Hughes purchased the resort from the
previous owners, some of which were connected to the Detroit mob. In 1988, Margaret Elardi bought The Frontier from the late Howard Hughes company Summa Corporation. If you visited Las Vegas in the 1990's, you may remember the Culinary Workers strike against the New Frontier was almost a permanent fixture. They were on strike from 1991-1998 in front of the property. In 1998, Phil Ruffin (now owner of the TI) changed the name back to The New Frontier. Ruffin partnered with Donald Trump and built the Trump International Hotel Las Vegas on about 3 acres of land that was part of the rear parking lot for The New Frontier - it opened in 2008. In 2007, The New Frontier was sold again. It was demolished and imploded on November 13, 2007. Plans for different resorts came and went. Wynn Resorts currently owns the property.
Fun Fact:
Elvis Presley made his first Las Vegas Appearance at the New Frontier in 1956.
Fun Fact #2:
In 1981, Siegfried and Roy starred in the production "Beyond Belief" at the New Frontier Hotel and Casino.
Fun Fact #3:
Gilley's opened at the New Frontier in 1999 and was re-opened at the T.I. in 2010.
