    PLAZA Hotel and Casino History:
The Plaza Hotel and Casino is an iconic downtown Las Vegas landmark and gateway to the Fremont Street Experience. The Plaza was built on the former site of the first train depot in Las Vegas which was built in 1905 by the San Pedro-Los Angeles-Salt Lake Railroad (purchased by Union Pacific in 1921). In the 1940's part of the site was used for a Streamline Moderne train station.
    In 1971, the Union Plaza
opened at 1 Main Street as the largest hotel and casino in the world with just over 500 rooms. Owners included Sam Boyd, Frank Scott, Howard Cannon and Jackie Gaughan.  In 1992, the name changed to Jackie Gaughan's Plaza. In 2004, Barrick Gaming Corporation acquired the Plaza from Mr. Gaughan and then later operations were ceded to majority owner The Tamares Group.  In 2010, the hotel closed for a million renovation - however, part of the casino, race and sports book and showroom were still open.  The all new Plaza reopened on September 1, 2011 featuring Oscar's Steakhouse (named for famous mob lawyer and 3 term Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman), along with over 1,000 new hotel rooms, and renovated casino. The Plaza can be seen in many movies, films and videos featuring downtown Las Vegas.
    Fun Fact:
The Plaza released Silver Strikes from 1995-2006.
    Fun Fact:
In the 2003 movie "Looney Toons Back in Action"
, the Plaza serves as the hotel tower for "Yosemite Sam'
    s Wooden Nickel" casino.
    Fun Fact:
The Plaza purchased furniture and items from the unfinished, never opened, and bankrupt Fountainbleu Resort to do their remodel.
